Today I am thankful to live in a place where I can go to the doctor.

Today I am thankful for the spring like day ahead.

Of course it is going to be fleeting -- very cold tomorrow but today will be wonderful.

I didn't post yesterday because I was sick.  I am still sick but I was running  a temp yesterday and just didn't feel up to par.  However, I was thankful for meds and for my warm throw that I got for Christmas.  Quite cuddly.

Today I am thankful that I didn't wake up feeling as bad as I thought I might.

Allergies, allergies, allergies -- need I say more?

Today I am thankful for the internet.

I know there are a lot of things about the internet that are bad and that is all you hear about but there are good things too.  I especially like being able to connect with old friends over social media sites and to get good recipes off cooking sites.

Today I am thankful for hot tea.

I am not a coffee drinker and so hot tea is my morning beverage of choice.  I am drinking lots of green tea lately and this morning I am having green tea with mint.  Yummy and warm and seems to be opening my stuffy nose quite nicely.

Today I am thankful for alarm clocks.

I needed to be up earlier today and I wouldn't have made it if it hadn't been for the alarm clock!  It is just cool enough and I was just cozy enough that, if not for that clock, I could sleep until noon!  Have a wonderful day everybody!

Today I am thankful for leftovers!

I know, that doesn't sound like something somebody would necessarily be thankful for but it has been a busy day and I am really glad that I have leftovers to pop in the oven and heat up.  I even have left over salad and zucchini!  Yay!

Yesterday I was thankful for a beautiful day for a drive to Dallas.

Just got busy and didn't get it posted.

Today I am thankful for modern medicine.

My brother in law is facing some cardiac surgery -- the same surgery that my husband faced eight years ago -- and I am so thankful that modern medicine made the surgery easier and that my husband is in really good health now.  Hoping the same for the bro-in-law.  Please Lord, let M do well with the surgery and be healthier and happier for it.

Today I am thankful for having the privilege and opportunity to care for Bean.

Thank you Lord for this child.  Please watch over her, keep her safe and sweet and let her always know that the most important thing in her life is that she is Your child.

Today I am thankful for prayer.

I like starting my day in prayer.  It is usually short, most often "thank you" but it sets my focus for the day.  Thank you Lord for the opportunity to pray both privately and publicly.  Thank you for listening to me and thank you for being my Father.

Today I am thankful for Claritin.

The cedar is here folks -- take your meds.

Today I am thankful for sunshine and warm temperatures!

Yes, I know it is the middle of winter but this is Texas after all and we do have radical weather changes and apparently we are having one of those today! Thank you Lord for sunshine following the rain. Thank you for the warmth on our faces.  Help us to use this good weather to your glory.

Today I am thankful for the rain and for me getting to my destination safely.

We really need the rain.  We had ice which wreaked havoc on our lives for a week and totally tore up the streets and, while I am sure it was beneficial in some way, I am glad it is gone.  However, for the last two days we have had rain.  Plain ol' rain and warmer temps so it is good for the yards and the plants.  I can hardly wait for spring to see all the plants come alive.  Hopefully no more ice!

Today I am thankful for a very good day.

There isn't much to say about it, nothing spectacular happened, it was just a good day and for that I give thanks.

Today I am thankful for my clergy.

I attend St. John's Anglican Church in Fort Worth and I have to say that I am extremely blessed by wonderful clergy.  Father David Klein, Father Bill Estes, Fr. Tom Powell and Richard Moseley are the most caring, genuine folks I have ever known as are their wives, I might add.  Last evening we had the pleasure of running into this group (sans Fr. Powell) at a local restaurant.  The celebration of Richard passing his canonical exams was ensuing and the joy radiating from Richard and the rest of the group was palpable.  It was a wonderful thing to happen upon them serendipitously and share in that joy.  Thank you Lord for the blessing of good, caring clergy.  Please bless and keep them.

Today I am thankful for my husband.

Hubs adding the angel on the tree

Hubs and I met and started dating when I was 15.  I was just out of junior high school and he was just out of high school and on his way to Texas A&M University.  We dated for seven years, my high school and college education, his bachelor's and master's degrees.  We married in 1972 and have been together since.  We have been though good times and bad, as all couples have, we have endured each other's illnessess, as all couples have and we have had our squabbles as all couples have.  However, I have never known another person that I would have wanted by my side through everything -- good and bad.  He is a good husband and I am blessed.  Thank you God for sending me my husband.

Today I am thankful for my cup of warm tea.

It is cold in my house even though the heat is on.  I am sitting here sipping a cup of hot tea with milk - no sugar.  I can feel its warmth from the inside out and it is very comforting.  I pray for the people who don't have a simple cup of hot anything to warm them.  I pray for the people whose home is under the bridge.  I pray for the children standing at the bus stop in this frigid weather.  Dear Lord, please bring warmth and comfort to these people.

Today I am thankful for aspirin!

I know, that sounds strange but this cold weather has really gotten to my joints -- as did my brief spurt of exercise.  Our weather has been quite variable -- very cold to very warm in just hours.  I know this is Texas and we are to expect changes but this is sort of strange.  Very cold this morning, colder tomorrow and then a nice warm up.  At least no ice but all this changing about has my joints all messed up so I will be having aspiring first thing this morning!

Today I am thankful for my ancestry.

I have always been interested in genealogy.  It was always a main focus in my father's family as there were some notable ancestors in that side of my family.  However, the side of the family that I was most interested in was my maternal grandfather's side as they were "recent" immigrants and came from England/Wales.

My great-grandmother, Dinah, was born in the Forest of Dean, Gloucester, England but moved to Blaina, Wales as a young girl.  She was raised there, married there and had several children there.  She and her husband, James, came to America in 1889 with four children and settled in Scranton, Pennsylvania where they expanded their family by several more children, my grandfather being one of those children.

I never knew this great-grandmother as she passed in 1937, thirteen years prior to my birth, but I knew of her.  My grandmother lived in Scranton for a while and, honestly, the two women didn't get on well but she did say that my great-grandmother made these wonderful little tea cakes. Back then, we didn't talk about family stuff much so I didn't know a whole lot about this side of my family.

Years went by, my grandparents passed away, I acquired a computer and set about looking for what remained of my family.  Armed with a name on a death certificate I set about looking for family in Scranton and find them I did! That has been years ago now and we have a wonderful relationship -- it is hard to believe that we have never seen each other but, though the magic of the internet we feel like we have always known each other.

During one conversation I asked about Grandmother Dinah's little tea cakes and my cousin Jean offered up the recipe.  Now, granted, this wasn't Dinah's recipe but rather her daughter-in-law's recipe but I have looked at enough recipes for Welsh Cakes to know they are all pretty similar so, while I think of Jean when I make these cookies, I also think of my great-grandmother and wish I had known her.

I make these cookies around Christmas each year since receiving the recipe.  Here are photos of this years offerings.

Cooking on the griddle!

Yum!

Today I am grateful for modern heating!

Don't you just love the look of old, wood stoves?  And, I love my fireplace, but I am so thankful for central heating as I crawl out from under the covers.  I remember growing up with Coleman wall heaters.  We had one in the living room and one in the back bedroom.  For some reason, my mother never wanted to use the one in the bedroom.  She never let them run at night, either so I would wait in bed in the morning while she turned on the heater and lit the bathroom heater

and waited for the house to warm up.  Granted, it was a small house, just under 1000 square feet, but that was average for the time.  It didn't take long to warm up but I remember waiting under piles of cover until it was safe to dash into the warmed bathroom, shut the door and stand in front of the heater.

Yes, I am thankful for central heat but just the thought of those cold winter mornings bring back wonderful, albeit chilly, memories.

So, stay warm on this cold morning, spring is just around the corner!

Today I am thankful for the ability to read.

When I was small  remember sitting next to my mother on the sofa, watching her read the newspaper.  I was in awe.  I remember asking her what it felt like to be able to read -- she couldn't tell me.  I don't remember learning to read, I think I must have been able to read a bit before I went to kindergarten thanks to playing school with JLSHall.  I do remember the Dick and Jane books in Kindergarten however and I remember loving them and loving learning to read.

Reading is now one of my favorite pastimes.  I real all manner of written material from newspapers, classic books, popular fiction, non-fiction and blogs.  A book that I have recently begun reading is this version of the Bible.  It was published in 1966 and was given out to all members at our church.  I remember it being controversial at the time because of the language in which it is written.  It is written in common every day English and the authorities said much was lost in the translation and I believe it.  However, our pastor at the time said that may be so but it was a good way to get people who found the KJV or even the NIV versions daunting to get into the Word.  I ran across my copy a couple of weeks ago and have been reading it.  It is certainly different but I am finding it enjoyable. Is anything lost?  Probably a lot but still, it is a good read and I hope to get all the way through it.

So, yes, I am thankful for my ability to read and I think that making sure that all children can read should be a priority in our society.  It seems that there are a lot of reading deficiencies in the schools today and I feel that should be the one thing that should be corrected immediately because, in my humble opinion, if you can read and have good health you have everything and can learn/be anything.

Today I am thankful for the New Year and all the promise that it holds.
